The economic realities of commercial road freight in Algeria

Why do so many small truck operators work exhausting hours only to face mounting debts?

The "Cash-in-Pocket" Illusion

Pocketing 8,000 DZD after a trip does not mean you earned 8,000 DZD. If fuel was 2,500 DZD, you hold 5,500 DZD in cash, but you also consumed 1,200 DZD of tire tread, 1,500 DZD toward future oil service, and 2,000 DZD of vehicle capital value. True net profit may only be a few hundred dinars.

The Empty Backhaul Trap (الرجوع فارغاً)

A 150 km loaded outward haul equals 300 km of actual driving if you return empty. Quoting only the outward distance forces you to absorb 100% of fuel and wear on the backhaul out of your own pocket.

Official Algerian Fuel Pricing (January 2026)

Calculations calibrated to official ARH statutory tariffs: Diesel at 31 DZD/L, Unleaded Petrol at 47 DZD/L, and Sirghaz (LPG) at 12 DZD/L. Subsidized diesel strongly favors long-distance inter-wilaya freight.

The 4 levels of a good price

Every dinar you collect should cover your costs first, then your pay, then your profit

1. Trip expenses (fuel, road)

Immediate cash outlays (fuel, highway tolls, road meals). Quoting below this level means paying out of pocket to do the job.

2. Vehicle wear & upkeep

Insurance, road tax, tires, maintenance and money set aside to replace the vehicle. Excludes your pay.

3. Your pay

Level 2 plus fair pay for every hour of driving, loading and waiting.

4. Your target price (with profit)

Level 3 plus the profit you choose, to invest and handle the unexpected.

Petrol650 kg to 850 kg legal payload

Mini-trucks and pickups / Chana Star

Very low barrier to entry on the Algerian market. High availability of cheap Chinese-origin replacement parts, but petrol operation incurs a noticeable cash premium over subsidized diesel.

Economic cost / km:~ 14.5 DZD
Consumption:7.8 L/100km

Petrol800 kg to 950 kg legal payload

Mini-trucks and pickups / DFSK K01

Dominant presence in Algerian urban centers. Economical mechanical layout, although continuous overload rapidly wears the clutch and rear axle.

Economic cost / km:~ 14.1 DZD
Consumption:8.2 L/100km

Petrol650 kg to 800 kg legal payload (crew cab)

Mini-trucks and pickups / DFSK K02

Combines a 5-seater crew cabin with a cargo bed. Reduced bed length compared to K01, but highly valued by small contractor teams.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions by Algerian Carriers

Practical guidance and actionable economic benchmarks for independent transport operators

What is the difference between freight revenue and real net profit for an Algerian transporter?

Revenue is the total gross cash received from the client. Net profit is what remains ONLY after subtracting fuel, highway tolls, tire wear, vehicle depreciation, periodic maintenance, insurance, registration fees, and your own wage as a professional driver. Cash in hand does not mean the haul was profitable.

How do you calculate real fuel cost per kilometer in Algeria?

Multiply average fuel consumption per 100 km by the official pump price (e.g., 31 DZD/L for Diesel or 47 DZD/L for Unleaded Petrol), then divide by 100. For instance, a van consuming 10.5 L of Diesel per 100 km costs 3.26 DZD in fuel per kilometer traveled.

Why does an empty return haul double the real cost of transport?

If you travel 100 km loaded to deliver goods and return empty, the vehicle covered 200 km in total. The customer quote must account for round-trip mileage unless you have secured a guaranteed backhaul payload. Pricing only the outward leg forces you to absorb the return trip at a loss.

What is vehicle depreciation and why is it critical?

Depreciation reflects the loss of vehicle value over operating years and mileage. Without allocating a monthly reserve for fleet renewal, an operator will not have the capital to replace an engine, gearbox, or purchase a new vehicle when the current truck reaches retirement.

How do you evaluate if a shipper’s freight price offer is acceptable?

Compare the offer with the 4 levels: 1. trip expenses (the minimum so you don’t pay out of pocket), 2. vehicle wear, 3. your pay, 4. your profit. Never accept an offer that doesn’t cover at least level 2.

Why can a profitable haul still be financially unattractive?

If a haul yields 1,500 DZD in profit but consumes 8 full hours due to loading/unloading delays, your effective hourly return drops below basic wage standards. Time spent on a job is just as critical as distance traveled.
